A BOTOX® lip flip for thin lips is a popular way to add fullness without adding volume. The temporary lip filler treatment uses neuromodulators to relax muscles in the upper lip, causing it to “flip” and making it appear fuller. The botulinum toxin is injected into the corners of the mouth and the edges of the lip to relax the muscles around the upper lip. This causes the upper lip to move outward, or flip, a little bit, which results in the upper lip appearing to be larger, fuller and poutier. The results are more natural-looking than traditional lip fillers, which are solutions injected directly into the lip to add volume.
Using a thin needle, your provider injects 2 – 4 units of BOTOX solution into the appropriate areas around your upper lip. The entire injection for your lips generally takes 10 – 20 minutes. You may feel some pain, but if you are afraid of needles or overly averse to pain, ask if a numbing cream or nerve block can be applied before the procedure.
You will be monitored for about 15 minutes to ensure you experience no side effects (allergic reactions, dizziness or bleeding) before you are allowed to go home. Most clients notice the effects of a lip flip in just a few days, with the full results appearing in about a week. The results of this temporary treatment typically last 3 – 4 months.
Using BOTOX for a lip flip is safe when performed by an experienced provider. Complications and side effects are rare and mostly short-term. After a lip flip, clients may have some pain and swelling, but these effects dissipate in 12 – 24 hours.
Lip filler treatment may be uncomfortable. However, we combat discomfort by using a topical numbing cream before performing lip injections. Lip fillers may result in swelling, bruising or redness, but any undesirable side effects should diminish in less than two weeks.
